A garage door rarely fails without warning. Catch these signs early and you’ll usually turn a major repair into a minor one.
1. New or louder noises
Grinding, scraping, or banging usually points to worn rollers, loose hardware, or a spring problem. A door should run relatively smoothly — a sudden change in sound is your cue to have it looked at.
2. Slow or jerky movement
If the door hesitates, stutters, or moves unevenly, the balance may be off or a cable may be slipping. Ignoring it puts extra strain on the opener.
3. The door won’t stay closed — or won’t close at all
This is often a safety-sensor alignment issue, but it can also be a track or cable problem. Either way, a door that won’t seal leaves your home exposed.
4. Sagging or crooked movement
If one side hangs lower or the door looks crooked in the track, a cable has likely frayed or come off the drum. This is a safety issue — stop using the door and call a pro.
5. A door that suddenly feels heavy
If you ever operate the door manually and it feels far heavier than usual, the springs are failing. Don’t keep running the opener against it.
6. Higher energy bills
An old or poorly-sealed door lets conditioned air escape. New weatherstripping — or an insulated replacement door — can make a real difference.
